Mountain Artworks Studio: AKA Michael "Goose" Sizemore

I feel the need to wake up every day and create. Through the years, I have found that my personal happiness involves accomplishing what I have deemed my motto... which is to MAKE ART EVERY DAY.

I was told long ago that if you want a happy life, go to bed tired. Making sculptures out of metal is such a physical process that this can be accomplished quite easily.

The sculpture that I create is going to be on this planet till the volcanoes make their rounds again and melt it. That's pretty cool!

Artist Statement

Fire and spark are the tools of my trade. I get a sense of pride knowing that a sculpture that was created in this way will be on this planet long after my time here has ended. The heat of combining metals mixed with the physical nature of sculpture gives my body and brain just what it needs to get up every day and create what I see, feel, and experience.

My place in this world is to create and that is what I shall do, every day.

Goose's History

Goose, Mike, Sizemore, this dude...

Was raised to be creative. Born in 1969 in Fayette County WV to a father that was an engineer and a mother that was an Appalachian craftsperson, he absorbed both of what his parents would instill in him. His father gave him the math and the scientific thinking that would allow him to create things in such a way as they would survive well out in the world and on the other side of this coin, his mother gave him a very real experience in the how to keep the creative juices flowing and to practice and harness the artistic portion of this world.Evenings were filled with math problems as well as sewing and weaving. Of course he found the most fun in learning from the more artistic side of this world, yet the engineer in him would always come forward in his mind and make for better creations as time went on.

There was no such thing as boredom in this household. You would be expected to do your homework from school and then to keep you busy you would be given something creative to do. Sewing and making things from cloth was an early talent that still shows up in my work today. From patchwork in the making of clothing as well as hook-rug and even paint by numbers, there was always something creative to be accomplished.

My first sculpture that was ever created was a totem pole that I carved with my grandfather. During my youth there was an emphasis on the Native American history which I found fascinating. Later as an adult and traveling through the American southwest, my art took on a more of a spiritual flavor as I was surrounded by Pueblos and Native American tribes that would influence my vision as an artist.

MICHAEL A. SIZEMORE

Mountain Artworks Studio was founded in 1996, when I returned to my West Virginia home after living and working in Santa Fe, New Mexico for 6 years. My fascination with the Anasazi pictographs and petroglyths of the American Southwest is evident in all of my creative works: from small, copper wall hangings to monumental sculptures made of various metals. The linear elements of those ancient designs as well as my love of the organic world are two major themes in all of my art. I conceptualize in dreams, engineer on paper, and produce in the welding shop.

Traveling WV: Mountain Art Works

August 1st 2019

Athens W.Va. — Michael Sizemore had athletic aspirations during his college years, specifically basketball. Standing well over 6 feet tall it's easy to see why. Those dreams didn't pan out, but Sizemore's true passion did as he eventually landed at Concord University as a studio art major. "I knew I was really good at that," says Sizemore from his home adjacent to the Concord campus, "I wanted to do that." Michaels's home is also his Mountain Art Works studio, where he creates some of the most beautiful, one of a kind sculptures you've ever seen. Using everything from copper, glass, and various items some might throw away, Sizemore's work has become much sought after for private homeowners as well as large commissions.
